Artists make media, mentoring appearances
June 28, 2004

In this lazy summer month between concerts for their Weapons of Mass Distraction Tour, artists Elender Wall and Bryant Kong haven't been sitting around on the couch, eating Trader Joe's rice crackers and watching The Daily Show. Among other activities, they've been taping appearances for radio and TV and sharing their music and experience with local voice students.

Recently, the artists taped an in-studio interview for KUSF's program Podium, in which they talked with host Rick Champion about the new songs, The Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld. The program features lectures of contemporary or historical importance and discussions of important events. The hour-long interview will be aired Wed., July 28, at 8:00 pm, on KUSF 90.3 FM, the radio station of the University of San Francisco.

In a totally different vein, Elender and Bryant were invited to appear on TechTV's Unscrewed with Martin Sargent, "the ultimate showcase for the darker, funnier, sexier world of technology and the Internet."  During the taping on June 17, the artists brought a bit of culture and a good laugh at Rumsfeld's expense to the pepped-up studio audience and—soon—to Unscrewed's younger, plugged-in viewers, demonstrating Stuffed Penguin's credo that classical music can go where it doesn't usually go and be very well-received. We will let you know the broadcast date as soon as we have it.

Also on June 17, Elender and Bryant visited the voice class of Professor Judy Hubbell at City College of San Francisco, Elender's alma mater before she went on to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The artists shared with the interested students how they came to record their debut album, performed a selection of songs, and took part in a spirited question-and-answer session. Elender and Bryant plan to continue mentoring music students as they are invited to perform at colleges and universities in the future.
