Poetry
of Donald Rumsfeld inspires teachers and students
Mar. 29, 2004
The Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld
recently served as inspiration for high school teachers
and students taking part in Detroit's Newspapers
in Education (NIE) program. Drawing on composer
Bryant Kong's use of the words of the Secretary of Defense
to create new songs, the NIE lesson plan for the week
of March 15, 2004 asked students to look to current
events to create their own new artworks.
"In an
age of musical sampling, collage and literary allusion,
artists are looking in unusual and surprising places
for inspiration," the lesson plan said in part.
"Look through today's newspaper for a story, idea
or picture that you find interesting and use it as the
basis or inspiration for a piece of art. Your art can
be a story, a poem, a song, a rap, a painting or another
artform."

of Donald Rumsfeld immediately captures national
media attention
Mar. 20,
2004
Just a few
weeks into its public release, The Poetry
of Donald Rumsfeld has already captured national
media attention, beginning with a feature
interview on National Public Radio's Morning
Edition—broadcast by more than 600
stations nationwide—on Mar. 12, 2004. Along
with the feature, NPR selected the story as an Editors'
Pick and published
its coverage on its website, NPR.org, where it
was the #1 Most E-Mailed Story for several days and
one of the top few stories for a solid week.
The
Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld has also appeared
in the Sunday Los Angeles Times ("Rumsfeld
goes on the record," Mar. 14, 2004) and is scheduled
for feature coverage in the Syracuse New Times
(NY) and The News-Tribune (Tacoma,
WA). In addition, composer-pianist Bryant Kong and
soprano Elender Wall are scheduled for live interviews
on radio stations in Los Angeles, CA and Springfield,
IL.
